I'm wanting to travel Philadelphia this fall, and I'm really wanting to visit some of the famous locations where the past "Rocky" movies were shot at because I'm a big fan, and my number one reason for wanting to go to the city of brotherly love is so I can visit various famous Rocky locations.

However, many (not all) of these locations are in bad parts, including North Philly. Based on the online research I've done, North Philadelphia is a dangerous part of Philly. Other Rocky fans who have been there encouraged me to go during the morning or day time, and also recommended taking a cab there and paying the driver well so he or she could offer their assistance as well if need be.

What do you folks think? I admit, I'm nervous enough as it is going there because I've heard, and read that it can be a dangerous city, and not all the locals are the warmest of people.

Hmmm... well there's the famous Blue Horizon Gym on the 1300 block of North Broad Street. I don't know if that is where Rocky was filmed. Joe Frazier's gym is somewhere up there as well. You'll may also come across more than a few large murals painted onto buildings as you travel through. Other than that, there is relatively that North Philly offers to a visitor.

You'd be better off visiting the South Philly locations as well as staying in the Center City area. You'll have a safer experience. This is the Northeast so expect a bit more hustle and "attytood" than you may be used to in the Southwest but you will meet your share of friendly people. Enjoy running up the Art Museum steps and enjoy the view at the top as you pump your fists!

If you are driving the ultimate experience is to blast Power 99 with the windows down as you pass Cecil B. Moore Avenue. Seriously, have no fear. Just walk through, take pictures, and enjoy. But, do not go to Kensington under any circumstances.

Thank you for the responses. Here is the list of the exact Rocky locations I want to check out. Would you guys mind telling me if some of these spots or safe or not.

The first five spots I know are in safe parts....

1. The Philadelphia Museum Of Art

2. The Philadelphia Kelly Drive

3. Independence National Historic Park

4. The Spectrum Arena

5. The Philadelphia Zoo

But here is where I start to wonder, and worry...

6. The St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church on 1719 Morris Street.

7. The Italian Market on South 9th St. & Carpenter.

8. The building that was used as Mighty Mick's Gym on 2147 N. Front Street

9. J & M Tropical Fish on 2146 N. Front Street.

10. The building that was used as The Atomic Hoagie Shop on 12th Street and Cantrell Street.

11. The building that was used as Rocky's apartment on 1818 Tusculum St.

12. The house that was used as Adrian & Paulie's House on 2822 Rosehill Street

13. The building that was used as Little Marie's House on 1124 Jackson Street

14. Little Marie's (as an adult) house on Jasper St. off of East Somerset St.

15. The building that was used as Andy's bar located near the famous intersection K&A in North Philly.

16. Pat's King Of Steaks on 1237 E. Passyunk Avenue.

17. Victor Cafe on 1303 Dickinson St.

18. The building that was Bonwit Teller & Co. on SW Corner of S. 17th St. & Chestnut St.

19. Laurel Hill Cemetery on 3822 Ridge Ave.

So 13-18 are okay, but 14 and 15 are not, right? Are 13-18 in South Philly?

Thank you so much for the info, I'm very, very grateful.

By the way, is the Spectrum Arena open for tours?

I wasn't sure about 14 and 15 (which I believe are in Kensington), that's why I didn't respond. 13, 16 and 17 are in South Philly, 18 center city,

The Philadelphia Phantoms (a minor league hockey club) play at the Spectrum, and the circus and other performances take place there. But I doubt if they give "tours." You could probably just walk in and look around. It is being torn down though, so if you want to see it, you better hurry.

Kensington is safe during daylight/early evening...its in the wee hours when the the folks get liquored up and start shooting...I would hang out in Kengsington any day over any section of North Philly (above the University City area, Strawberry Mansion, North Broad Street by Temple, Olney or by the Zoo) at night...

So those other places are in North Philly I assume?

A few people told me that if I go, I should go in the morning or a little after the morning when the gang members and homeless people are sleeping. And a lot of the other fans took a cab to those places. Are cabbies pretty friendly, and helpful? And what are the prices like?

I hope I'm not annoying you guys with these questions. I'm grateful for everything you guys have told me already.

#10 and #12 is also South Philly. The other places are in Kensington. A lot of cab drivers are foreign, some friendly, some not (like all groups of people). Cabs are expensive. Like Orrmobl says, you are ok if you go in the daylight. Take public transporation. Go to SEPTA, and click on plan my trip. That will give you directions.
