I think what was outlined in the original post was fairly accurate.

As for the post above this one, if you change some of the wording that doesn't sound too much different than the Bronx, Queens, or Brooklyn, though those places don't have too many colleges.

I thought that post was slightly excessive.

I lived in South Jersey for 16 years, and then I moved to North/Central Jersey and I have been living here for the last 11 years. I have been to both New York and Philly alot of times. Your kind of right their are similarites but their are differences. The crime in Philly 1993 or around that point until(2009) now is worse then New York City. However, in the past nothing really compared to New York City. In the 1980's Brooklyn had 700+ to over 1000 murders a year, and Brooklyn is the size of Philly. Philly I don't think has ever had over 500 murders in a year maybe somewhere between 300-500 murders in a year. Take the income of people living in the Bronx alone and I bet it is pretty low compared to Philly. New York is about 8 million people and Philly about 1.5 million people, Chicago is a good comparison to New York but Philly is like a suburb to New York City. The traffic is alot worse in New York alought traffic in Philly can get bad. Center City has got along way to go before you can say it is like Manhattan. New York is the city that never sleeps alot of things stay open , philly is similar but alot of thing do close down at night, the night life in Philly can't compare to a New York night life. Outside New York you got North Jersey with alot of small urban cities and areas(Newark,Jersey City, Elizabeth, Irvington, Hoboken, New Brunswick, etc.), outside of Philly its rural country type towns accept Camden you got small rural towns in South Jersey and Penn. The attitude in Philly is more a down south laid back attutude(city of brotherly love). New York City is the most rudest and aggrsive city in the U.S. people will start a fight with you for just looking at them funny and noone really says hy, road rage is crazy in NY will could get into a fight or alot worse. The cost of living in Philly is cheaper, but the city is less convient the public trasportation system is not as good as New Yorks trains don't come and leave as frequently. The food in New York is the best in the country New York pizza is the best, the pizza in philly is not as good. Chesse steaks in Philly are overated chesse wiz on a cheese steak is discusting. American chesse and mayo makes a good cheese steak. If you don't believe me try Carl's steaks in New York its the best. Philly people got the New York infority complex and are sick of living in NEW YORK's shadow, and New Yorkers just don't give a city like philly respect. Bottom line, Philly a great little city to vist(compared to New York), but New York is World Wide and still got the crown.

World class? That would indicate some level of recognition internationally.
Hate to spoil the thought, but outside of English-speaking Western Europe, no one knows of us.

The exhaustive comparisons to NYC are getting old. We're not like NYC. Yes, we're a major U.S. city. But that's about where it ends. We will never compete with the sheer density of what NYC has to offer.
We will never be mentioned in the same breath as London, Paris, Rome, Athens, Tokyo, etc. They are the definition of "world cities".
Meaningful comparisons can be made with great U.S. cities such as Boston, or Chicago. Philadelphia has great attributes and rivals Boston historically.

Philadelphia needs to focus on distancing itself a bit from the
"Philly Cheesesteak/yo' Adrian-Rocky" image, gain a more relevant modern edge and stop trying to be NYC.

I have lived in all surrounding suburbs and must say that Upper Darby is/was really nice with an excellent school district if you have small children.
Montgomery County I have found to be the best!!!!

I have since went back to NYC and yes cost of living is high in reference to RENT, but you can find discounted items such as personal care items and clothing alot cheaper if you shop on the Avenues, Fashion District, and/or Canal St. Just the rent is higher but the city-life and income is much higher
Yep, Philly will never be a middle class city let alone upper income residents. People with money have flooded out to the burbs. Center city has the condo projects which might help some but the structural problems are so bad it's always going to be a 'down to earth' or 'blue collar' city. It is what it is.

Philly is the size of a NYC borough, no arguments. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. Philly will never have the money or prestige of Manhattan but it doesn't need to. It's got more history than NYC and is much more liveable.

The main thing I disagree with - people around these parts don't run around saying how much they envy NYC. NYC is not even spoken about in Philly metro outside of the sports teams. And some of the best places to live in the US are in the Philly metro area. I lived in NJ/NYC metro for a number of years. I can honestly say that Moorestown is far superior to northern NJ, with maybe only a few exceptions. Ironically I can get to NYC almost as quickly since the traffic is so much easier around here and I can take the direct train from Hamilton, NJ which is just up 295. That's the best of all worlds.

These are pretty good points. I really don't know of anyone in this region that envies NYC or the NYC region. That's not to say that there aren't people here who may yearn for Philadelphia to have more nightlife, more top-notch restaurants, more big employers like Comcast, etc. But people don't sit around at dinner and talk about how great NYC is. Those that really like NYC tend to be kids fresh out of college, and, if they can, they move there.

Your first sentence is true.

Your second second is ridiculous. You should learn more about cities and the countries in which cities are in. Most countries have 1 very significant city. Our's is NYC. England's is London. France's is Paris. Japan's is Tokyo. NYC, while great, will never have an equal in this country (unless it sinks into the river). Don't expect Philadelphia (or any other city) to be equal to NYC. Your second sentence indicates you feel this way.
