born/raised in phily - NYC has much more to do obviously but Philly is a more condensed version. You'll certainly be able to sample all our restaurants/nightlife - whereas in NYC - it could take you years. Like all cities - Philly's crime rate is higher in some areas. The thing I do not like about Philly - is that it's dirty. I've seen cleaner streets in Manhattan. Here things gets dumped in the streets and our city doesn't do a very good job of cleaning up the neighborhoods in terms of garbage.

Default Harlem is in Manhattan!!!!!

Center City in philly is alot cleaner than Manhattan in New York City. There are 4 metorpolitan cities ( population of people over 200,000) in the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey, Penn. New York City, Jersey City, Newark, and Philly. Philly by far is the cleanist and nicest of all those cities. Harlem is in Mahnattan not really clean at all, and even in wealthier areas in Manhattan you still see bums begging for money and trash on the streets. I Never seen bums in Center City philly and your streets are spotless. Thats the only you philly boys can say!

Default Its like comparing oragnes and apples
I believe the OP is from the NY/North Jersey area, at least thats where the majority of his/her post are concentrated.

Its usually a New Yorker bringing this topic up.To be frank with you from my experiences nobody from the Philly area cares that much about NYC. If anything I get a sense of doom that NYC has gotten so overdeveloped that it may one day destroy the QOL in the Philadelphia area, at least from a suburbanites perspective.
If New Yorkers bring up this topic so why are you starting the discussion? If the Philly area dosen't care about New York why do you guys always compare yourself to New York? Philly has the worst case of New York Inferotiy complex in the country!!!

Default Whats a philadelphia?

I just got back from studying in Australia and every person I encountered knew Philadelphia.
I have been outside the country to and the 1st thing people said are you from New York, why does everybody want to come to New York. Nobody knew philly or even cared when i metioned it, and I was in Asia. Which has alot higher population than Europe with more people. Which makes New York more popular around the world. I have not been to Africa, but if you go to some poor village and ask a person to name a city in America (if they have any idea of America) you can't honstley say they would name Philadelphia 1st and not New York thats crazy. If anything the poor African is saying New York. Maybe Washington D.C. or Chicago, but not philly. I don't even have to go to African to know this!!!!

Where I live people get pretty excited about Philly...Its where Independence Hall is, where I live, not many people have been to the East Coast and when they hear that you've been to Philly and seen what you've studied in History class, they are intrigued...They also want to try cheesesteaks and see a real city and are interested that people actually take trains to work, as taking trains here are unheardof...

Yes, Philly is no where near NYC and man of us prefer it that way. NYC is on a much grander scale terms of nighlife, transportation, and accesibilty but I will take living in Philly anyday. Granted, the many times I'v visted NY, I love the accesibilty of things. Stores are open late, you can buy almost anything off the street. However, NYC is too damn congested and overpopulated. The buildings feel like there are on top of each other and you can barely walked through the street without bumping into someone. The parking in horrible. People in NY have made up their own driving rules. anhattan is way too big while Center City is more centralized. Of course the wages in NY is better than Philly, the cost of living is so damn high. The entrees@ a TGIF Friday is $ 5 high than that in Philly. The drinks cost more. For $1500, I could get a really nice 2 or 3 bedroom apartment in a nice area in Philly. In NY, $1500 may get you a 1 bedroom rathole in the ghetto.
