Baseball doesn't seem to be that popular with younger people as it is slow, and often boring to them.

If by younger you mean young adult, I would say that group in general seems less interested in sports all the way around. If your talking young youth participating in sports, soccer and basketball are now the most played.

Now if your talking talented youth that are serious about sports, Basketball and Football are currently the top choice as they are the only two men's sports that offer full athletic scholarships to college. That is especially true among African American youth, and the biggest reason why African Americans only make up about 8 percent of MLB, where as they make up about 70 percent of the NFL and even greater in the NBA.

I think the biggest reason for that is the prevalence of foreign (esp Latin American) players in baseball that you don't have in football or basketball.

Hasn't it been that way for a long time? I haven't been paying too much attention.

Dominicans, Ricans and Hispanics in general have Baseball on lock for sure. These are people flooding into our country by the way which is why it befuddles me when some think that Baseball is going anywhere, its not and it's only going to continue to grow as more Hispanics come here and more white and black americans dump football. not to mention Asians love it as well.

Also, plenty of foreigners play Basketball. It's huge in China, the Philippines and some parts of Eastern and Southern Europe

American Football? Cant say the same. That sport has problems but it's going to take a catastrophic injury during a Super Bowl or Championship game for it to really set it for a lot of people.

Many younger people are increasingly saying the same thing about football as well. Not in this city obviously but around the country

Basketball might be popular in those countries, but there is not an influx of foreign players in that sport the way there is in baseball. There are more in basketball than football for sure, but nowhere near the level of baseball.

There have been catastrophic injuries in the Super Bowl. Tim Krumrie and Jeremy Lane for example.

Having a large presence of Latin players in MLB would not be a reason to keep African Americans away. There are plenty of African Americans that play HS Baseball. In fact a large majority of both College and Pro Football players played High School Baseball.

When it comes down to after HS, blacks seem more inclined to go with the sport that will give the best deal scholarship-wise. It does also happen with white athletes, although not as much. For example Tim Tebow told reporters in Florida while playing in the Mets organization that Baseball was always his favorite sport. My guess is he chose Football for the full-ride.

Of course in Baseball they can skip the college route and enter the draft out of HS. But unless they are one of the best 200 in the entire country they will sign with not much of a bonus and will play for poverty wages with nothing to fall back on and they are part the 90 plus percentage that never make a Major League Roster.

MLB is doing things to reach out to blacks such as their "Urban Youth Academy" and their RBI (Restoring Baseball in the Inner Cities) programs. They are also lobbying the NCAA to increase scholarship money for Baseball, but unless MLB is willing to kick in the bucks that will not happen since Colleges make no money on it.

It's not a reason to "keep anyone away", but it definitely is a reason that the percentage of AA players at the pro level in baseball is lower than other sports simply because there is a lot more competition for the limited supply of spots at the pro level. That's just a numbers issue.

It's harder than ever to find tv ratings for hockey and basketball. I've been following for years.

About halfway thru a season, Sports Business Daily comes out with the top 5 and bottom 5 teams in tv ratings for the NHL and NBA. I think that's more reflective of popularity than attendance.

Has anybody seen any opening night ratings or any other ratings for Flyers vs. Sixers, especially when playing head to head on the same night?

In Boston, a pre-season Patriots game this August almost doubled a Red Sox vs. Yankees game in a big series!
