I am new to the area and have noticed there are some fruit and vegetable focused grocery stores. Which ones are worthwhile? I read reviews that some say they keep the produce behind the counter and give you a pre-sorted bag, meaning, you aren't allowed to pick through it, so you are likely to get some fruit/vegetables that you wouldn't have picked if you had been allowed to pick through it.

I love Produce Junction. It's so cheap you cannot be picky. If you don't like what they give you, refuse it, but don't expect them to keep bringing bags until you're happy. It's that unbelievably cheap because it's prebagged & the line moves unbelievably fast. Bring cash.

We like Tanner Brothers in Richboro, Bucks County. Bring cash or check. If possible go on a weekday. Weekdays are busy, but weekends are packed!

Iovine Produce in the Reading Terminal Market is a great one. It can get a little crowded on weekends but the prices and quality are really good.

FYI -- Produce Junction --
For singles, the bags may be too large.
Meaning, if you only need one or a couple of pieces of a given item -- ONE onion, TWO peppers, ONE avocado, TWO kiwis -- this may not be the store for you.

I agree, but some things are sold in small portions or containers. You can buy a 10 oz. container of mushrooms, one melon, one bunch of herbs, and so on.

If a person believes that's worth an additional stop on their shopping trip....more power to them.

Sometimes on shopping day, I have other errands also. In addition to other stops, at times I already have two stops just for food...I'm not adding a third food stop just for a couple of items.

AND you have to stand in line TWICE....once for fruit, the other for vegetables...I don't think so. But I know plenty of people do it.

It was worth it to me to go there once in a while--especially when the price of certain items was through the roof at a supermarket. I wasn't going to pay $2 for one lemon when I could get a bag of 6 for the same price at Produce Junction. Their mesclun, heirloom tomatoes, and avocados (sold individually), are all significantly cheaper.
