Hi there ,

I just moved into Philadelphia area less than a year ago for a job. I am currently working in a company in the Navy Yard (Southern Philadelphia) and living in a one-bedroom apartment in Cherry Hill NJ. The apartment is very nice but very expensive. The lease is about due and I am planning to move to PA side to save some money and commute time. I am still looking for a one-bedroom apartment and the rent I would like to pay is around $1000 (up to $1100). As I am new to the area, I would like to get suggestions on which areas are within 30 minute driving distance and safe to live? Someone suggested Ridley Park. Is this a good area? Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help.

Do you want to be within the city or in the suburbs? That is the big question.

If you want to live in the city, you need a roommate basically. Otherwise suburbs would be easier for you. Ridley Park is nice, but might be more than 30 minutes. Essington seems a bit gritty to me, but fine as long as you don't have a family.

I don't know how the rents are in Essington or Ridley Park, but they should be cheaper than the city generally speaking.
