I like to keep abreast with local news and one of the websites I frequent for local news is 6abc News. However, I can't help it but notice that most of their news is shooting related. For example, on their homepage this morning, 12 out of the 19 news stories are shooting related.

Not a single weather related news even with the on-going crazy storms this morning.

I just went to the website and "STORMTRACKER 6 AND ACCUWEATHER" was the main link/image on the page.

Weather/traffic used to be more important on the news ("weather and traffic on the 2s"/"every 5 minutes"/etc.) but with phones, it seems most people just check for weather/traffic when they need to in the palm of their hand---the information is more localized and updated and specific to the user.

As for the shootings, I guess you've never heard the news adage "if it bleeds it leads".

What you are seeing has been true of local "news" for years and, not surprisingly, it gives a false impression of the city as a whole. It's shameful, imo.

When Ed Rendell was mayor he did talk about they would focus on this brand of sensationalism and little that was positive.
So, as you see, they are still at it.

If I watched local news(I don't anymore) I would never put a toe in the area where my relatives live in W. Philly. My reality is I never have any fear going there and do not dred that my family is in danger.

yeah well Ed Rendell only focused on center city and the wealthy that live there.

He didn't give a damn about the rest of the neighborhoods and that is why most of the shootings and murders and focused there. Street didn't give a **** either.

I agree that there was way more crime when both were active politicians.

Still true. No one cares much about what happens outside of Center City. Also, I think ABC is at the top of the "if it bleeds it leads" coverage. If I watch local news at all, it's CBS.

Afaik, Rendell lived in East Falls(probably still does) during that time. It's okay but not a posh neighborhood. And, afaik, Street lives in the Yorktown area of N. Philly. It's okay but....

I think they cared about non CC neighborhoods more than you seem to think. Nutter had an enormous focus on CC and paid way more attention to it, imo.

The crack epidemic probably contributed to a lot of crime back then too. No one seems to remember crack nowadays.

If you mean the local media, yes...true.

You might get something positive re Greater Center City.

Channel 6 Action News is the standard bearer fro News. The theme song, the opening pictures, and then the grim face of Jim Gardner. "There was a shooting on 45st and Chesnut........" Brilliant!!
