Are the areas in and around Temple safe? I also hear there is a Fort Washington campus, how is that area?

You can do a search for Temple on this board and get various opinions.

The area around Temple is not safe, but the campus is. Fort Washington is safe, but since most likely you are young, I recommend living in center city and going to the main campus.

Here is my standard advice:

Your best bet would be Washington Square West. It's right in the heart of center city and you can take the Broad Street Subway to school. If you have a car you might want to think about selling it. For the times you do need one you can use PhillyCarShare.

Another possibility would be Bella Vista. That's south of center city, but still close and you could also take the Broad Street Subway.

I suggest you check craigslist for rentals in both areas.

Temple is a great school - good luck!

On, then you would be fine. The campus itself is ok.

The other likely campus besides the main one is in Ambler. The Fort Washington campus is basically a building that hosts a lot of continuing ed classes. The Ambler campus is nice, with fields, multiple buildings, gardens, etc.

Temple's campus is definitely solid for an urban campus. Just don't venture off campus too far (unless you are near Broad Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue, in which case you can venture a little off campus).

Default Fine

Since you are not planning to live here then you will be fine. The campus is very safe. Furthermore, I would sometimes drive to campus and park off street and I have never had a problem, though I would be aware of my surroundings walking to my car if I was there late. Of the stories I heard of people that had run ins, some could be attributed to their own carelessness. Furthermore, I went to a university in a small western PA town for grad school after Temple and similar incidents happened there, so for its size and location, Temple is very safe and a great school.

I go to Temple now, and I am living at one of the dorms on Broad and Cecil B. Moore. I honestly feel really safe here. There is a strong police presence on the campus itself and I have had absolutely no problem.

However, as others are saying, venturing a few blocks off the campus in any direction is probably not a good idea. I went on a run with a few of my friends a while ago and my friend got rocked in the jaw by some thug totally unprovoked when we were running around 20th and Montgomery... haven't done that again. Then again, there isn't really that much of a reason to wander a few blocks off campus anyways.

I've walked from Temple to Center City all the way on Broad Street and there are parts where it gets kind of seedy, but nothing that is too terrible, at least in my opinion... and keep in mind that I'm a skinny white kid from the suburbs! I probably wouldn't do it at night, though.
