You really have to share your budget to give any recommendations.

There is a perception from outsiders that Philadelphia is dirt cheap. But that is not technically the case depending on what you are looking for. Desirable neighborhoods are definitely not cheap.

The below "unofficial" safety map is a good reference for someone trying to familiarize themselves with the general safety of different neighborhoods

Hey there. We live in the area too and glad you're coming...Without more info can't help too much but the map Angus posted is pretty good. Having been to LA just once, I am profiling you and suggesting you look into olde city/south philly area.

If you are just looking for a 1 bedroom or studio you should pretty easily find a place in South Philly in your budget. I would stay close to the Broad Street subway for commuting purposes. Neighborhoods you should look at Graduate Hospital, Bella Vista, East Passyunk, Lower Moyamensing. Might be able to find something in your price range in Fishtown as well. In this price range the places may not be super renovated or anything.

Yes, it's very different here as you've already imagined. Especially in the suggested neighborhoods which are quite urban in that the primary housing consists of row/ town houses. But they are reasonably close to Center City where you will be working.

If you can, I suggest you try to come for a visit. That might help orient you better beforehand.

I live just north of Center City( downtown) in Spring Garden. So you might want to check that out along with Fairmount which is adjacent to it.

Just to mention how different it can be. I got rid of my car three years ago because I was rarely using it.

And the weather. That will be very different for you as well.

Thank you for the advice. I wish I had time to go there for a visit....but my fiance's job is moving him there....so we leave march 29th. I only have time to wrap up my job and family matters here....say bye to friends and pack. I am a little over the top with joy and fear. My fiance is from there but has not lived there for 15 years and we hear so much has changed. The weather .....yikes....I know that will be hard to get used too! but truth is...California is always hot year around...no seasons and no weather at all. I wish it would rain more here. I am just nervous and excited and feel like I am going there with no friends and its just a little scary.
