Some parts of New Jersey also have good suburbs.

New jersey is suburbs..ok, Camden is a city...I guess. Though I typically think of cities as having a downtown business district that isn't 5 buildings within a couple of blocks ( I'm from NYC, so I'm used to an island that is a city). Philly is the center of both the PA and NJ suburbs. That isn't a bad thing for jersey, but it's sort of wedged between NYC and Philly, them being the centers of employment for many in the tri-state area.

Wayne (on train line, own movie theatre right downtown, national chain stores in downtown like Gap) close but not to close to city with some breathing room. Malvern would be a good choice as well, as would Ambler and Abington.

It also has everything you asked for including the community spirit that can't be found everywhere (including the surrounding nice enough towns) The walkable downtown is Jenkintown. Schools are excellent. The east side of 611 is pretty posh (Rydal, Meadowbrook, Huntington Valley) and the west side is more middle class (Glenside, Abington, Ardsley, Baderwood, Willow Grove) but the community spirit can be found everywhere. Plenty of houses in your price range. Downside is there is no freeway.....access is by 611 (Broad St) but it is only about 10 miles north of downtown so the time is short. Zip code for Google and RE search is 19001, 19046, 19006
are there decent homes/areas in this area for $200-$230k?

The prices in that area are substantially higher than that part of Mongomery County. Maybe a condo and they are probably higher than that too.
