How's everyone doing amongst the Coronavirus shut down? (Philadelphia, Atlantic: lenders, hotels)

Working remotely with my FT job; my PT job is a library job and we are closed, but they are paying us. No monetary loss during this, I'm actually making money and won't be spending anything on SEPTA or Lyft. I plan on paying off some credit card debt and saving, so I can travel when this mess is over.

In truly important news though, I've been reading about the service sector and hourly wage workers. Very worrisome. Likewise! I went for a 10 mile run today -- Beware, I went along Kelly Drive and was shocked by how crowded it was. I'm not sure it's the best place for "social distancing" at this time.

One of my neighbors told me he's laid indefinitely off as of today.

He's a car jockey/prep/driver pick-up person at one of the airport valet parking places.
He asked me to help him sign up for unemployment.
I'm sad for him.
I don't think he has any savings.

I am proud of Pennsylvania for extending unemployment benefits to hourly employees in this time of need.

I had the same thought about social distancing in the popular running paths. Here in Conshy luckily it's not as crowded. Yesterday, I read research yesterday that said Covid19 droplets can remain viable in the air up to a few hours. A little chilling.

I'm currently signed up for Broad St which is only 6 weeks away. We'll have to see how things go between now and then. Stay safe, everyone.

We are in recession, imo. I doubt there's a way around it now.

Likely a recession that will make the last one look like a children's birthday party. They're saying it could hit 20% unemployment, double the Great Recession. There's no question that the financial toll and unemployment will be very heavy. It may change this country in ways we don't yet know. I'm praying for the best but preparing for the worst.

It will be different from the last one, that is for sure. How it plays out and what things will look like when the dust settles is not clear. I would bet that if it lasts more than a month or two then the move towards virtual office will accelerate faster than it already has.

I worry about the small business owners, the gig economy workers and those who don't have savings for a few months of hardship. There will be a stimulus bill passed soon. Hopefully, it provides relief for those groups.

Service and tourism/travel are going to be hugely impacted for sure. I do agree on the acceleration of virtual work, but that's already happening. Organizations that had remote capabilities partially in the past are now making a huge investment into hardware, software, network and licenses to equip employees. I don't think it will wait a month.

On the other side, the mortgage industry is literally blowing up because of low rates, which may not be available for long due to volume and lenders trying to slow new applications.

Even before this I was consumed by worry last summer that the ongoing trade war would soon cause a global recession. I really had not thought about a pandemic causing it but here we are.

A local mom and pop restaurant that has been in my neighborhood for at least 35 years may have to close if it can't make their payroll. This place has never been closed for any extended time before. Not through snow storms, hurricanes, 2008 financial stuff. Never. Sigh...
