Hi! We are a family of 3 moving to Pennsylvania from New York. My husband will be working in the downtown philly area (centre city) and we are looking for a home to rent in the greater philly region (specifically Montgomery and Bucks county). Our main criteria is a safe/affordable neighborhood with an easy DRIVING commute to downtown. Bonus: close to shopping centers/grocery.

We have "narrowed" it down to the following but would like some insight on which fit our needs best:

MONTGOMERY COUNTY:
1. Plymouth Meeting
2. King of Prussia
3. Jenkintown
4. Collegeville
5. Landsdale
6. Conshohocken
7. Naberth

BUCKS COUNTY:
1. Yardley
2. Langhorne
3. Newtown

Thank you in advance! Any insight would be helpful!

Yes, please do copy/paste and answer the questions in the link Flyers Girl provided.

For now, assuming that your husband would prefer a commute of less than an hour, then you'd need to cross off King of Prussia, Collegeville, Lansdale, Yardley and Newtown off of your list.

Affordable is subjective; hopefully you'll elaborate in the questions. They're all pretty safe with plenty of retail options immediately available or very close by.

Why no Delaware County (out of curiousity), many nice cities there with direct rail access

Is there a particular reason why you want to drive to central city? Most who work in central Philly and live out in the suburbs prefer to commute by train.

Yes, commuting by rail to Center City makes more sense, unless your husband will need his car during the day.

Exactly so. Definitely need parameters of rent- do you plan to be here longer term or just temporarily?
Family of 3 how old is child? School etc.
All those things would be helpful in order for others to provide some guidance.

The areas I would not recommend are Collegeville (long commute), Lansdale (long commute). Both are nice areas though.

You can definitely make the rest work.

Yardley and King of Prussia will be your most challenging commutes but doable.

Jenkintown is a bit of an annoying commute, but definitely doable as well. Same goes for Yardley and Newtown, but it really depends on how close you plan on living to Rt. 1 or 295/95 for these two communities.

Because if it takes you over 15 minutes to get to 295/95 from your home, then your commute will probably be over an hour in traffic. The same goes with King of Prussia, with how close you are to 202 and 76.

Having some idea of your budget, will most definitely allow posters to recommend communities more appropriately. Some offer more than others, depending if you have a large budget for a nice single family home, or are looking at an apartment, townhome or twin home.

oh wow! Definitely not a fan of an hour commute. We were thinking 40 minutes tops. Those towns made the list because residents in PA told us they were an easy commute. Yikes
