Made it back to Vetri for the first time in almost 7 years this weekend. It was an excellent experience and still a great choice for a special night out. Had to show vaccination cards when we arrived and then otherwise did not have to wear masks. Particularly likes the sweet onion crepe, swordfish braciola, and the roasted lamb. Only thing I wasn't crazy about was the fluke dish, but that is probably my fault for ordering as I don't care for Olives.

We were originally going to go to Steak 48 but kept reading underwhelming reviews. Glad we made the change.

Has anybody here ever had the roast pork from John's Roast Pork?

If so, how is it?

Even better than their cheesesteak, a notch above Tommy Nicolosi's (DiNic's) in the RTM and way better than Tony Luke's.

John's deserved the James Beard Award it got.

Thanks!

It's on the 'to-eat' list.

I'm not sure I fully agree with Sandy. It's good and very traditional but I didn't find anything that really separated it from other South Philadelphia roast pork.

I'd say less good than DiNic's and in the same ball park as Tony Luke. I suppose I would need to do a side-by-side to be honest since I eat way more steaks than pork. Maybe John's is spiced better than TL?

De gustibus non disputandum est, but you'd probably be doing a real service.

And FWIW, DiNic's does make an excellent roast pork Italian. Whether or not John's is superior or inferior to it is probably a matter of taste. I'd still rate TL's below both.

I finally "passed around the rep" enough to be able to rep you again but I'm glad it worked out for a Latin reply.

I would put DiNic's on the same level as John's, I have had both a few times and both are very good. The real under cover gem at John's is there massive breakfast sandwiches.

Van Leeuwen Ice Cream opened their Gayborhood spot last week, and 2 more planned next year! Rittenhouse and Fishtown. New York chain, but damn good ice-cream.

https://www.bizjournals.com/philadel...ladelphia.html

Some interesting tidbits from the article...

"One reason for the extended timeline is that the permitting process in Philadelphia vastly exceeds that of New York. For example, it took almost a year to secure permits for Midtown Village despite not doing much work beyond fixture and tile changes, whereas in New York the process is usually greenlit in 24 hours, Van Leeuwen said. "

Why is that? ^

""Other than New York, we don't think there's a city in America with a better pedestrian street feel and street culture than Philadelphia.”"

"The Midtown Village shop has so far outperformed Van Leeuwen Ice Cream’s forecast, dishing out nearly 2,000 scoops on its first Saturday in business — more than has ever happened at any of its Los Angeles, New York or Houston locations, Van Leeuwen said. "

Encouraging and ridiculously frustrating all in one.

Why does Philly DEMAND that it shoots itself in the foot at EVERY turn?

Unbelievable.
