The train station is at 30th st and the attractions you want are at 2nd to 6th street. You want a hotel down in the historic district so if you come by train you will just have to cab it down there. No big deal. I think of Philly as Manhattan meets colonial Willimsburg. The "Manhattan" part is at one end of town (13th st to 29th st) and the "Willimsburg" part is between 6th and Front St (There is no 1st st)
Philly hotels are expensive. Holiday Inn has a good location at 4th and Arch St that is in the heart of the historic district. There is also a Sheraton at 2nd and Walnut. Also the Society Hill Hotel is a sort of Bed & Breakfast that is well located. Also the Pennsview and the Best western Independence Park and the Omni are down there. They are all expensive unless you can get a special deal.

I find the following website confusing with too much of the wrong kind of information but if you take the time you should get somthing from it.

I recently stayed at the Westin in downtown Philadelphia. The rooms were clean and the staff was friendly.

Perfect time to do priceline. I got the Omni right next to the Liberty Bell a few years ago for less then $100. by diong it on Priceline, and it was a perfect location.
