Mod cut - Please note that this thread was started in 2017

So, I wanted to move to the east coast and I was thinking about either New York, Philadelphia, or Boston. I'm Vietnamese and there is virtually none in NYC and they agreed on the New York forum that Philly would be a better choice which I thought as well.
I know South Philadelphia has a large Vietnamese population but I don't need to necessarily live there but just nearby. Are areas like Olney and Kensington safe? I know there are some Vietnamese there but I don't think they are safe. Would I be better sticking to South Philly? Do you know any nice neighborhoods that are affordable? They don't have to be all Asian but just safe enough where I can go on runs at night and walk/bike to stores and have some diversity or Vietnamese restaurants.

Imo, yes, it would be better to stick to S. Philly especially for a newcomer. The Vietnamese community in S. Philly began in the late 1970s so it's obviously a long established one. There are also Cambodians and Indonesians in S. Philly.

Stick to South Philly. Just yesterday morning I parked my car at 17th & Moore to walk over to the Broad St. subway and take it up to City Hall for jury duty. On my 5-block walk I picked up two separate conversations in Thai (I am Thai) and saw several Asian people walking their dogs and kids around. Also saw some white people walking around. But yea, hearing Thai was the last thing I expected and it surprised me. So I agree with kyb01, stick to S. Philly. There is a great stretch of Viet supermarkets, restaurants and strip plazas along Washington Ave from 11th st down to 5th st.

I never live in South Philly so I don't know anything about which area to live around South Philly. Although I know lots of my Vietnamese friends live in Pennsport.

If you come in the next several year, you could check Lincoln Square though. It is under development now.

Welcome!

The abduction of three men, two of whom were stabbed fatally and thrown in the Schuylkill River and one of whom survived, was related to a dispute involving a violent Vietnamese gang, reports say.

Police said at a press conference Wednesday that there was a "drug nexus at the crux of this double homicide," but declined to elaborate.
