Can anyone tell me about the Center City area? I'm considering an apartment there and since I'm not from the area, I'd like to know more about the atmosphere, etc. THanks

IMO, center city is the best place to live and very safe (using common sense). There is much to do here, great restaurants, culture, history. It's very walkable (and parking is expensive), so unless you absolutely need it, get rid of your car. You can always join PhillyCarShare. Center City is divided into various secions: Rittenhouse Square, Washington Square West (a/ka/ the Gayborhood), and Society Hill, and the art museum area (Parkway). All of which are good. Where exactly is the apartment you are looking at? We have the Reading Terminal Market Reading Terminal Market › Home and Trader Joe's. Feel free to ask any specific questions.
