I'm moving from Pittsburgh to Philly in a few months. Pittsburgh has been a bad fit for some time now. Oh well, can't change that.

What are your top-five, all time favorite Philadelphia neighborhoods, and why? Just wanna see what everyone has to say.

welcome east !

my faves in this order...

Old City district (reminds me of a mini SoHo)
Bella Vista/Queen Village (if you dig the gritty South Street culture)
Washington Square
Rittenhouse Square

Just as a point of clarification, almost all the neighborhoods listed above except Chestnut Hill and Manayunk are located in or very close to Center City Philadelphia (typically considered to be bounded by the Vine Street Expressway to the north, South Street to the south, the Delaware River to the east, and the Schuylkill River to the west.

Default places to live

Manayunk if you are under 30.
Chestnut Hill if you are over 40.
Northern Liberties is hot and still somewhat affordable for younger singles.

If you are willing to venture outside city limits check out Consohocken and Ambler (reviving quaint older small town with a nice main street and a train station with 30 min commute to center city).

Another option of a small town that is slowly gentrifying is Bristol in Lower Bucks County. It's on the river, close to everything, and an easy 30 min drive to center city.

Good luck.
