I lived in Center City as well as Bella Vista for several years, and enjoyed my time there quite a bit. I do have to say though, previous to living in Philadelphia, when I spent most weekends there (I was in high school, go figure ), I did get mugged twice.

I think it all depends on how street-smart you are, your location, what time of the night it is (ie. don't expect to not get mugged if you are wandering around the city at 4 AM after going to an after-hours), and plain, simple luck-of-the-draw. One of my best friends almost had a "situation" with a few jerks, but pulled out his phone and loudly spoke as though he was on the phone with the police.

Common sense generally prevails, although being in the wrong place at the wrong time can just happen. As in any city, or suburban area for that matter.

OMG, that's great.

Personally, I got no time for haters.

We're not Detroit or Cleveland (or Houston or Atlanta). We have a booming downtown population that's the 3rd biggest in the country. We have cultural attractions that are matched only by a handful of other american cities. I'm not begging anyone to move here. It takes heart to live here. Plenty of people have what it takes to live here but if you don't you won't last.

If you visit here or live here and only see a sh*thole that might be because you're superficial or lazy or both. It's your loss all around and we're better off for not having you.
