What kind of installtion costs would I be looking at for a house? That includes the system and installing duct work in a house that is at least 50 years old.

Depends on the size but my buddy did his house which was a 3 bedroom ranch, probably under 2000 square feet and it ran him $7,000 for everything. And you should check with your neighbors - some homes are just not designed to work well with central air without major cutting of venting and returns. My old neighbors who had central air all had a window unit hanging out of the master bedroom because the upstairs just never got cool enough. So I just got all window units and did the install/uninstall every year. Window units are cheap and quieter than ever, they have thermostats, are lightweight too. I highly recommend Sharp, stay away from Maytag and Amana and Haier.

If i were you i would check into having a heat pump installed also which might be an extra $3000 but you would save a lot of money in Oil or gas if you take this advise!

If you already have have the ductwork it should be cheaper but if you don't it'll probably be around $10k - $12k. It really depends on how big your house is and how many floors b/c that'll determine how many zones you'll need.

My house is old and has a gas, hot water heating (radiators) system. Installing the ductwork for central air would be expensive, disruptive, inefficient and require 2 or 3 zones. So we're installing a ductless system instead.
