How is the area around the 30th Street Station Amtrak Station? This is going to be my first time in Philly and my train is stopping here for a layover. I'll have two hours so is there anything to do in the area? Good resturants, shopping, etc? Is there any crime aroudn this area or is it pretty safe?
Thanks for everything

You can walk safely into center city. With two hours, I would stay in the Rittenhouse Square area (which is the western end of center city). Just walk east along Market Street (it's not a long walk - you walk over a bridge at 29th Street and at the end you are at 23rd Street. When you get to 20th, head south to Walnut Street and Rittenhouse Square. There are plenty of shops and restaurants in the area.

It depends on the individual. It would take me all day to walk that far. You could save time by jumping in a cab and going to 17th and Walnut, walking around for an hour and then taking a cab back to the station. (allow a half hour each way to be safe in case of traffic.) The station itself is usually crowded and has lots of places to eat and shop. The area around the station is safe and busy but not too pedestrian friendly and there is no retail nearby except inside the station. (Also check to see if your connecting train is on time)

I think you can catch a free ride on any of the Regional Rail Lines to Suburban Station at 16th and JFK. They don't usually take tickets that soon if I remember correctly or just buy a single zone ticket each way...I would do that in lieu of walking around the station area as its not really pedestrian friendly as Bryson said and you have to walk pretty far to get to the good stuff...

They don't collect tickets between 30th Street and Market East - it is indeed a free ride.

You could also walk on the Penn campus and eat at one of the places on Sansom St.

You could also jump on the subway or one of the underground trollys but do you really want to get involved?

Taking a train does make more sense than walking. It takes about 4 minutes to get to 17th and Market. Just hop on any regional rail train, that's going in the direction of Suburban Station. Then just walk south two blocks to Walnut Street. If however, your train is late and you don't have as much time as you thought, here is a lovely place for lunch - across the street from the train station.

Bistro St. Tropez

No. 33rd St Station is on the Green Line serviced by the routes 10, 11, 13, 34, and 36 trolleys. You may have meant 34th St Station which is on the MFL El. The two are a few blocks apart and can be easily confused. To get to 34th St Station from 8th and Market you can just take any El train westbound. To get to 33rd St Station you would have to transfer to the Green Line at either 13th, 15th, or 30th St Stations and take any trolley to 33rd St. You have to request stops on trolleys if you're going that way.
