Hello to all,
I'm a foreign graduate, American trained neurologist, relocating to Philly, Temple University, from Washington DC.
Currently I'm renting on Locust St. Center City. I want to buy a place in some quite suburb not too far from the University. 20-25 mins drive is the maximum. A friend did suggest Chestnut Hill and East Mt Airy.
Any recommendations?
Thanks

They may have meant West Mt Airy, that's always been the nicer one (to my knowledge). Also, Mt Airy and Chestnut Hill are actually in the city, they're not suburbs. They're both quiet, historic areas with predominantly stone houses. Personally, I love that area. Chestnut Hill will probably be a bit pricier than Mt Airy, and the closer you get to Germantown the prices will also probably be lower.

I assume you will be at Temple University Hospital so you might consider the Jenkintown/Cheltenham Township area. Just across the city line in the northern burbs.

I agree with both above posters. Check out Elkins Park, Jenkintown, Cheltenham for a suburb with a lesser commute. You could actually also look into Wyndmoor and Glenside. I live in Chestnut Hill and it's wonderful. Quiet and safe, but remember it is the city. West Mt Airy is gorgeous and there are some places right off Lincoln Drive which would get you into the city quickly by means of lincoln dr to 76. If you're trying to be located in a place where highways are more optional, then I suggest Elkins park. You can get on 611South and take it right into the city and be at temple in 15min.I think this is the closest suburb for you to consider. Tons of older homes with a lot of history, lower priced twins in cute neighborhoods as well as condos.
