Greetings!

I'm going to visit NY at the end of the month for several days; however, I hope to reserve a whole day to Amtrak it over to Philadelphia and just walk around the city and the sights. Or I may take the Chinatown bus.

I would love recommendations on some good ~ but cheap to moderate ~ Italian and Chinese restaurants, since I hope to putter around in those areas. And perhaps I should consider a Philly Steak sandwich... Who do you think makes the best one?

I'm open to many suggestions.

Thank you for your help.

Jim's on South Street or Rick's in the Reading Terminal if it's still there...

Definitely Jim's on South Street for the real steak sandwich experience.
There are dozens of really good restaurants in Chinatown...stroll around and take your pick.

Jims (4th+ South)was excellent the few times I had a cheesesteak there. The steak I had at Ricks in Reading Terminal was an attack to my taste buds and digestive system, it was atrociously horrendous, I still get flashbacks from that 10 minutes of my life. IMO Stay away from the mass-lunacy of the tourist traps like Pats, Genos, Ricks for steaks, they simply dont have the time/patience to make a quality steak sandwich.

Wander on over to Bella Vista/Queen Village for a good Italian meal. This area of the city is still very well represented by authentic Italian culture + cuisine. I'd recommend Vill di Roma on 9th between Christian and Carpenter. The Saloon + Ralphs also have a huge following.

Good luck.

My favorite Chinese restaurant is Kingdom of Vegetarians in Chinatown. Yes, it's all vegetarian but I've gone there with carnivores who love it as much as I do. Delicious food, moderate prices.

My personal favorite for cheesesteaks would be Campo's on the 200 block of Market Street. As a teenager frequenting South Street, the cheesesteak's at Jim's never agreed with my stomach. Yet I saw people lined up around the corner to get in when I visited the area one wintry Saturday afternoon. So there you go.

Otherwise, I'm not really much of a foodie so I defer to the others here on other fine cuisine.

My favorite restaurant by far in all the world is Monks on 16th st in Philly. It is a belgian type place with hundreds of different beers and the best fries ever. entrees about $15. Best. Place. Ever. I wish I could take it with me whereever I go.

In order to get the most out of your trip and not waste it you should pick up a trolly tour behind the Marriott hotel at 12th and Market St. (12th and Filbert) It is worth the money even if it means you can't afford to sit down in a resturant. You can get somthing to eat at the Reading Terminal Market across the street. They will show you all the sights and you can get on and off all day. Also they can recomend resturants you will pass when you are ready to eat.

Hey, that's a great idea! Thanks for the tip!
