There's a section called Garden City that Borders Chester Park/Part of Chester that has some great old homes and smaller homes as well.

We almost bought a 6 bedroom bungalow style there last year for $218K, taxes were $4500. Too bad the place was too far gone to make that price work for us and the owners had to get that much to pay off their loan.

So there are definitely houses in Wallingford that have more reasonable prices and taxes.

Wallingford and Swarthmore are adorable, but you should pay serious attention to the property taxes -- they make what seems like a low-cost place get pretty outrageous if you plan to stay awhile. Media is very charming too, and a good place to visit/walk around even if you don't live there. I've met a lot of people who really like Havertown and Haverford Township schools. I don't know much about that area but I would check it out too.

Like I said, I found a place with taxes of $4500 per year - the less expensive/smaller houses have less taxes. And you will not find a nicer, more inclusive community in the Philly burbs than Wallinford or Media...well worth the tax bill IMO.
