What is this park like? Are the surrounding blocks okay?

I hear Market St. is really bad around 50-52nd streets. What about Osage/Pine/Larchwood between 50th and 52nd?

The rowhouses between that latter 50th-52nd Street stretch are actually pretty nice and well-kept by a mostly black group of working-class/middle-class homeowners. I would not necessarily recommend any of the apartments in that area, however. 52nd Street serves the tastes of the working-class neighborhoods surrounding it. In my experience, Malcolm X Park isn't used much except for picnics and such. It's probably fine during the day but it's weak night lighting would make me hesitant to cut through it at night.

I am speaking from first hand experience. Very bad area. I have patrolled those areas for the last decade. Heed my warning. Good luck.

I go with what Tone said, and that's also from personal experience. The blocks surrounding are generally ok and kept up by the residents. The closer you get to Market St though, the worse the area becomes.

Market Street under the El is shady wherever it is. It also happens to be that the areas around where the El is above ground tend to be less affluent. The areas on Kensington Avenue under the El look shady too. The tracks really make the street under it and the buildings around it dark and having a train running by every 8 to 15 minutes doesn't make it the best of real estate. I wouldn't generalize the condition of intersections by the El to other parts of the neighborhood. Obviously, the neighborhoods are generally of the same condition, but the areas under the El are a bit shadier.

Well, I found an apartment a few blocks away (on 50th near Cedar).

Is there still jazz at the park?
