I am wondering if anyone lives in or knows much about Thornton in Delaware County? We just moved here and are renting in Wayne. While the Main Line is very nice, the housing prices are too high for us. We need a short commute to Newtown Square and Thornton is one area we just looked at. While it seems more rural, it looks like it's being built up? We need good schools and Garnet Valley seems to rate very well. Any advice? We just want a safe, nice, family neighborhood within driving distance to more excitement/things to do...Thanks.

I live about 5 miles from Thornton. Nice peaceful area and most of the housing developments going up are high end $700K + which is a great thing if you can afford it or find a bargain. On its own merit this would be an outstanding place to live.

However you might want to do some background information on The Glen Mills School(juvenile delinquents) + The Delaware County Prison. You don't here of any crime back there but just keep those institutions in mind.

On the southside of route 1 near Garnet Valley High School is Concord Township, Chester Heights and Bethel Township. Very safe, family oriented developments, probably better choices and better value than Thornton. Still an easy commute to Newtown Square.

Good luck

thanks for the info...we are actually looking at a house that is off Thornton Rd...nice cul de sac streets like stirrup lane? Patriot lane..they all end in cul de sacs and seem to have a lot of children. One main reason we are looking there is to be in Garnet Valley Schools..how much of an effect does the prison and Glen Mills school have on this area do you think? We did see the high-end houses being built...the older homes seem to be a lot less expensive. Any other info would be so helpful..thanks.

The great part about the Garnet Valley area is that there is virtually no crime. The commercial strips are all isolated along Rt 1 and 202 etc therefore you don't have any potential negative influence wandering around your neighborhood.

Garnet Valley area doesn't even have their own police force, they use State Police if there is a problem. I've never heard of any problems with the prison or Glen Mills School but if you are seriously looking at that area it wouldn't hurt to ride around and ask the locals if Glen Mills or the Prison is a problem.

Good luck.

Boothwyn might be another option to look at. There are alot of older houses there, its safe and Garnet Valley schools for much of the area although a small portion may be attached to the Upper Chichester district.
