Hi all, I am looking to move to Philly and have been doing some research online...What can anyone tell me about the Northeast of Philadelphia where I am scheduled to go look at some apartments. I'm mainly concerned about safety, shopping areas, cultural activities and nightlife. Being relatively close to all those things without necessarily being smack in the middle of it all. PLEASE HELP!

Philly is a funny shaped city - kind of like a shoe with a heel that's about to trip over - so it's kind of tough to give a proper perspective but I'll try.

The Northeast is an area that primarily consists of working-to-middle class white and Jewish residents. Perhaps 10-15 years ago, the lower Northeast started to diversify, to the chagrin of long time residents who either moved out to the Far Northeast, across the city border to the adjacent Montgomery or Bucks counties or across the river to NJ.

You will probably find bars scattered through the neighborhoods but for true nightlife you will want to come downtown to Center City or at least over to Manayunk towards the NW ("heel") part of the city. I don't know if the NE is known for its cultural activities but you will definitely find more of that in Center City as well.

To be honest, some suburbs are closer to downtown than the far reaches of the NE. If you live in NYC, you will find that the transit system becomes rather infrequent late night if even available at all. Taxis will be expensive for that distance as well. Some other more convenient options to consider are: Manayunk and East Falls to the NW, Northern Liberties just north of Center City and University City west of CC (although you may likely be renting in a house in UC rather than an apartment building).

You should try to live in or close to CC Philly. Perhaps in a place like Northern Liberties. The far Northeast is full of crass talking ruffians who still listen to Winger and Ratt.
