I have heard that north broad street is not a very good place to be, and as far as i know that is where temple university is. I am looking into Temple, but i dont want to be getting off the subway to find myself in the middle of gang violence and drug wars, which i have heard goes on alot in North Philly.

Is North Philly really so bad that someone minding their own business can be dragged into something serious?

it depends on who you talk to and if they are a philadelphia county native.
you're answer?
no, you will be fine
use good instincts in questionable situations
i doubt they will arise
like anywhere else....you would be a tourist there, so stick to the tourist trail

Definitely type "Temple" into the search feature on the forum... or just look at the posts of current Owl JHG722.

In a nutshell, the campus itself is safe and other areas that students are most likely to frequent are improving. Common sense and street wisdom are always useful at late night. Temple University is definitely a inspirational oasis to the troubled communities around it.

I would never chance it... Horrible area of the city. A Temple education is not worth it

Of all the hundreds of thousands of people who have graduated form Temple without a single incident, should you really be asking this question?

I think the trick to working or attending a school in a high-crime area is to be completely aware of your surroundings. If you act like a poor student you may not be a target, emphasis on MAYBE. Don't walk around with an IPod or anything that indicates you may have some valuables on you or in your residence. Drink from a McDonald's cup, not a Starbucks. When I decided to go to school locally I knew most of the Universities were located in tough areas but I felt I'd rather deal with what I knew then to go to a strange city and waste time getting familiar with the same problems that exist in Philly. Like Tone said, the Temple campus is safe and the neighborhood outside campus, although still shaky, has slightly improved over the years.

The guidance to use common sense and be aware of your surroundings doesn't just apply to schools in a "high crime areas."

PS: As a Temple grad, I second JHG's comment to frankgn87.

yall need to chill
its just a reflection of the facts in what we have known about Temple comparatively. people with less money, and who are willing to settle on their education go to Temple
Drexel would be worth it though if it were in north philly
