Hey everyone,

I am 18 years old and actually recently dropped out of college to pursue a career in music. I hear that Philly has some great places for musicians and artists. Can anyone give me an idea of cheap artsy neighborhoods. Ive heard of Northern Liberties but also hear that it is kind of expensive now and days. Any other neighborhoods that might fit what im looking for?

Thanks everyone.

Just above Northern Liberties is Fishtown, where struggling artistic types are now retreating as NoLibs has crossed over into trendiness.

Also consider University City, across the Schuykill (SCHOOL-cull, SCHOOL-kill) River from Center City. The area bounded by 45th and 50th Streets and Spruce and Chester should provide you with affordability, diversity, convenience and a bit of an "edge".

Of course, "cheap" is subjective. If you have an idea of how much you'll be earning during and between gigs, we may be able to point you to places that could fit your budget.

Point taken about the wisdom of dropping out of school to pursue a career in music. But let's focus on helping the OP discover what available options they have.

And estimate of what I could afford would probably be somewhere between 400-600 a month. I am not just getting money from gigs I will most likely be working at a restaurant(line cook).

Try a tad west of Northern Liberties. I live near 10th in the Spring Garden street area. It's definitely less expensive and I've never had any problems with crime. It's best to find one or two roommates, though.
