+1. We also go on the back roads all thru the farmland and visit the small fruit and veggie stands..

Since I live here I agree with everyone who's suggested Lancaster County. From Philly take the Route 30 Bypass West. A few miles past Route 10 turn right onto Route 772 and follow it into Brownstown. You'll see alot of farmland, a great little waterfall and a great little shopping village called Kitchen Kettle. Instead of picking up Route 772 again at that point maybe continue on 340 for several miles into Bird-In-Hand. Very scenic. Once you get into Brownstown turn left onto Route 272 and you'll see the Oregon Diary on the right in Manheim Township. Whatever you do avoid the Route 30 shopping district; not the road for sightseeing. Also consider Route 23 West from the PA Turnpike to Route 322. We take that as an alternate to the Turnpike when we visit friends in Phoenixville.

Try Strasburg, Pa in Lancaster County. pretty area. Also think that Chadds Ford and the Brandywine River area is very nice. It's in western Delaware County. And if you are history buff, Gettysburg is wonderful. But as someone noted above, you might want to do an overnight/weekend trip there.
