Hello everyone,

So I am thinking to leave NYC and move to Philly to pursue a different career.

I would like to go to Philly, buy a home (which would be impossible here in NYC,), and
get a job, maybe buy another property later on and ne day live off the rental income and
become financially free.

I have visited last week end Philly and walked to the South East part, New Bolt area (kind of shady..), then walked to Northern Liberties (I liked the area),

I stil have not seen Starbucks anywhere except Market Street: why is that?

Here in NYC even if you go far away in Booklyn or Queens, I see Starbucks everywhere.

Is it because of the demographic (just not too many people living there), or more like a cultural thing?

I would like your opinon because, honestly, this absence of a popular coffee store is making me
changing my mind about moving there. I like Starbucks and bar/nightlife in general and I
doubt I will have it in Philly.

Can you pls share your thought?

thanks ;-)

Soooo you would only move to a city if it had a Starbucks? lol....

What do you mean by "South East area"? The area you claim to be "kinda shady."

You walk through a small portion of Philadelphia once, then generalize the whole city to not having any Starbucks? If you ask me, there are FAR TOO MANY Starbucks in Philadelphia.

Here are all the Starbucks in the city, a quick google search returned over 10 pages of Starbucks locations in the area:
starbucks philadelphia - Google Maps

If you look through the pages, I counted 33 total Starbucks in the city... and there are atleast over 100 more all throughout the Philadelphia suburbs.

Why would you not want to go to a local coffee shop/cafe though? They probably have better coffee/espresso/etc. anyways...

What do you mean you're afraid you are not going to have nightlife in Philadelphia? Are you suggesting Philadelphia has no nightlife? I think you are misinformed. While obviously not as grand as New York's nightlife, you will find Philadelphia has one of the best nightlife scenes in the country. What type of bars/nightlife are you into? We can steer you in the right direction.

thank you summersm33,

I gladly receive your map and info. I did not want to generalize, it was just a glanced summary of the area I visited. and I don't mind going to local coffee at all ;-)

I would LOVE to know where is the night life in Philly (a steet name or Zip code will do). I like to know
what is the most popular disco place in Philly, the most crowded bar, I mean where is the energy on Sat
night if you want to have a night out and meet new people.

awaiting anxiously for your reply

You were probably in Newbold, a neighborhood in South Philly. South Philly historically was more working class and I guess you would compare it to a neighborhood outside of Manhattan. Now South Philly is gentrifying fast and I would bet within 10 years there will be many Starbucks, if the chain is still around. If you want cafes and coffee shops there are lots around in nearby Point Breeze and Passyunk Square.

Starbucks is ok, but sometimes local cafes can offer just as good coffee or better, and have a decent ambience.

It'd be nice if Philly had more Targets, including a couple in downtown, and some SuperTargets in the suburbs. Atleast I feel that Chicago has that. In those, one could get the Starbucks.

The only thing Starbucks is good for is their bathrooms. There's a bunch conveniently located around downtown in case you have to go whilst walking between stops at our many actual real coffee shops.

By disco do you mean ACTUAL disco or house music/ dance music?

There is a ton of nightlife. Old City, Northern Liberties/Fishtown, Delaware Waterfront, Rittenhouse Square area, South Street, University City, All throughout South Philly, Manayunk.

I have no idea what is considered a lot or a little when it comes to Starbucks but you are asking because you think Philly is an affordable city where you can buy a house. You are correct about that. Most of the population outside Center City and maybe Chestnut Hill are working class if not poor and they are very value conscious. Starbucks is a wasteful and extravagant financial hit for those folks. They are probably getting their very delicious coffee at Dunkin Donuts or Wawa for a third of the price.

I have an apartment in Center City and pass by two Starbucks just on the way to my parking garage which is four blocks away, I don't know how you say Philly is devoid of Starbucks. It does depend on the area you are in, but for the most part you can find one relatively close by.

starbucks doesn't sell very good coffee. philly has both bars and coffee shops, a good number of them in fact. you can even eat at applebee's in center city after downing some starbucks. I'm not sure just how many of the same crap chain you need in order to feel comfortable here but I suppose it's more than the city has, amen.
