Thinking about moving to Philly from Pittsburgh next year. (Dormont: lease, crime)

I graduate with an advertising degree from the Art Institute in December. My lease at my current place isn't up till March, so it would be spring 2010 that i'd be leaving. i wanted to know where the cheapest places to live are that aren't bad (maybe south street or whatever it's called, I've only been to Philly once). I don't want to go past 500 a month. I'm not looking for a roommate either as the only person I know out there is my cousin, he's older and lives outside of the city. I wouldn't have a car but I think public transportation is good?

Give a pittsburgh girl some pointers, *ha*. I know it's big, and I want that. Pittsburgh is WAY too small for my tastes.

I got news for you, 500 a month ain't going to cut in Philly. Especially if you were talking about "South Broad Street". Even if you're talking about a studio in a decent area, it'll run you closer to 700 for something decent. I'm talking about South Philly now, I'm not real familiar with the North or West. The rents can be cheaper, but the crime will probably be way higher also. The public transportation in Philly is good.

Philly ain't going to feel huge to you (atleast it never did to me). Does it really matter how far a city's boundries extend? And Philly has alot of very narrow streets (like in pittsburgh), which makes it feel smaller if you ask me. It doesn't have alot of real wide streets like in Chicago or NYC does.

I forgot to mention something. You wanting the "big city" experience, is going to take more (probably double, or close to it) than your 500 hundred a month for rent. 500 hundred a month rent in Pittsburgh would be hard to find, atleast for anything decent in a half-way safe nabe.

That kinda rent is found in 'towns', not 'cities'. And certainly not in "big cities". I know you're young and still wet behind the ears. I'm just trying to give you a realistic heads ups........

haha nah! the rent in pittsburgh is super cheap, my rent now in dormont (a very nice quiet suburb outside of the city) is 399 a month and i live alone. pittsburgh is probably one of the (if the the most) cheapest city in the US. i've alone for a year now and never had a problem! my last place was 500 a month and also in an ok area. seems like people don't know the facts. don't think i could live in a city full of eagles fans anyways!

In this economy - Cheap is a GOOD thing, trust me.

But I always have said....Its take a Pittsburgh'er to move away to truely appreciate what the have...It hit me hard as hell after 4 yrs of being away....

Don't get me wrong I love NY and it too is now home to me, but there are things its just can't offer that Pitt does.

Hey kid, I'm from Pittburgh, and I know where where Dormont is. Actually, parts of Dormont are still in the city limits of Pittsburgh. And please don't act like there's an unbundance of nice apts in Pittsburgh for less than 500 a month, cause that just ain't true. Pittsburgh is one of they, if not the cheapest major metro in the country though. As far as me not knowing the facts?..... I've been all over this country, where have you been? I was never nieve enough to think that I could get an apt in Philly for 500 a month, atleast nowhere I'd want to live! Oh now you don't want to move to Philly?....Just as well, doesn't seem like you were ready for it anyways.......
