My main concern is the budget that Mayor Nutter has presented to City Council. If they don't approve it, and based on what I've heard, they probably won't, the Mayor may propose another budget plan that includes laying off police and firefighters. Council doesn't want the property tax raised but the Mayor needs to cut spending and he's running out of options.

If the shoe fits.........but seriously, the overwelming majority of murders in Philly are thug shooting thug in the "hood" so actually the more the better. It's cheaper then putting them in prison.

Knucklehead.
Hey people, why do you have to be so sensitive? Northbradin85 just asked a fair question. He didn't mean to offend anyone. I was also thinking of moving to the area, and frankly, would ask the same question. If he asks about Philadelphia is because he is at least interested in the city. You will probably make your city look better if you answer the question honestly and without sarcasm. Thanks.

LMAO...I couldn't agree more. However, it is kind of scary to have these thugs around

A lot of innocent people are caught in the crossfire. Last time I was in town I saw on the news a cop and taxi driver were murdered by some psychopath in Tioga. 2 professions seldom occupied by "thugs"

2006 - 406
2007 - 392
2008 - 331

Seriously? I'm pretty bad at algebra but I know there are 365 days in a year. If 2008 had 331 murders in the city then that's certainly less than 1 per day.

If, in 2009, we have 244 murders so far and October 20th is the 293rd day of the year then that would not only put us below 1 per day but it would also put us about 9% below this time last year and 24% below 2007.

If it stays at 9% until the end of the year then we should end up with something on the order of 300 murders for 2009.

If you look at in the context of the last 4 years it's not an unreasonable assumption.

2006 - 406
2007 - 392
2008 - 331
2009 - 301

All that nonsense aside, the middle-class preoccupation with the murder rate as an indicator of crime baffles me. You're as likely to be struck by lightning as you are to be murdered by a stranger.

Robberies and burglaries. Those are the numbers I watch.

And Philadelphians wonder why people not from here have the impression the locals here are rude or just not as friendly as in other places...Give them enough rope and they'll hang themselves.

Because they're not.

And of course since a vast majority of native Philadelphians experiences away from Philadelphia consist of going to the Jersey Shore (with other native Philadelphians) they're largely unaware of their lack of basic civility.

No one has to live or work in the "hood". Anyone who chooses to raise their children there is guilty of child abuse. Obviously cops don't count but that also is a choice.

I think the OP's question was fair and reasonable. I would say the city is doing better than at any time since the 1940's I just read somewhere that Philadelphia was here long before you were and it will still be here long after your gone.
