We are a 30-something couple looking to buy our first home in Wyndmoor,PA. The house and immediate neighbourhood and nearby Chestnut Hill seem fine when we drive by. I have also read some good things about Wyndmoor in these threads. We are now very near closing and are hearing things about proximity to the 'bad' areas of the city....Ivy Hill Road?....and the like that might land up being a deal breaker. If anybody who lives in the area or is familiar with it could comment on crime rates/stats, crime trickling in across the border and general safety issues, we would really appreciate it. The area we are looking at is 1.5-2 miles from the philadelphia/wyndmoor border- is that too close for comfort? Thanks in advance for your replies!

don't know the area all that well but have a friend who lives in Wyndmoor. i don't get any impression that there are any problems. 1.5/2 miles seems like a ways away from Philadelphia and even at that Mt. Airy is pretty nice. driving in from montco to philly on stenton ave. looks a bit more beat up aesthetically, but it still seems like a pretty decent neighborhood.

Thanks eggtimer! I agree- parts of the area look a little dated, but still neat and well-maintained. That brings me to the question of how will this neighbourhood look like say in 5 or 10 years? I am assuming the proximity to Chestnut Hill and to the city will make it easier to sell when we are ready to move?!!

It's a good neighborhood. Don't worry about the Philly influence. That county boundary, though invisible, does wonders.

Anyone who considers the area around Ivy Hill Road (West Oak Lane) a bad area of the city either doesn't get out much or equates all black people with criminals. They don't know what they're talking about.

Enjoy Wyndmoor.
