Most people know of the potential consequences... They just don't think it will happen to them.

I had a friend in Philadelphia when I was in elementary school. Grew up and hadn't seen him for a long time. When I did see him one day, he was being driven around strapped into the back seat with his mother driving. I stopped by the family home to see him later that week and he was "not there anymore," he was basically a vegetable. His mother explained that he came off his MC in his twenties, had not been wearing a helmet, and split his head.

He had been one of the smartest kids I had ever known. He took the gamble, and his family lost.
