I'm am in the process of moving and have considered South Philly as a possible location. I'm originally from Philly, but it has been about 15 yrs since I have lived there. I have two children so saftey and local schools are a concern of mine. Also I know that the job market is a concern across the nation, but (not to sound like I have been living under a rock for the past year or so), is the job market really that bad? My background is in customer service and research fields. I also hear horror stories about the crime rate in Philly. I know crime is all over, but how is it in the South Philly area?

Any info that can be provided would be greatly appreciated. I will be moving in the next two months.

You should be ok if you stay east of Broad Street.

Default South Philly

Not sure if anyone but the purists consider them still South Philly, but Bella Vista and Queen Village are great areas of town. Lots of families, kids and great neighborhood feel. I also am a big fan of the Passyunk area, which is pure South Philly and seems to get some new to add to the great old on a weekly basis. Good luck to you, you have picked a nice place to live!

I am so ready for a change from living in N.C. I was born and somewhat raised in Philly so I have always felt that was where my heart is. The other part of it is that I love the city pace, diversity and opportunities that are in the PA/NJ/NY area. North Carolina is extremely slow compared to the Philly area. I wanted to wait to my children were older, but I feel that now is the time. I feel like i'm searching for something in my life, and whenever I'm in the Philly area, that part of me seems at ease.

If you don't mind me asking, what was your reason for moving?

South Philly is safe for the most part outside of a few pockets. I'd be willing to bet 2/3 of the violent crime in the city takes place in a radius that encompasses 1/5 of the city (north Philly)

A lot of reasons were for the kids...educational system, cheaper groceries, nice quiet area to raise a family.

As for my wife and I, both of us were a bit 'burnt out' on the south. I originally grew up in the outskirts of Cincy. My wife lived in New Hampshire...so it was a homecoming of sorts for both of us. To be back in this area of the US...priceless

I had said in another post that I can't really narrow it down to just one thing. I guess it was just time for a change.
It has paid off so far...the family is very happy

The Italian Market has decreased and there are more Mexican and Asian places to eat.

Yes it is, but there might be more Mexicans in the area now than Italians, not sure. I know that I like the diversity of food there.
