Interesting...how much would my primary doctor lose by referring to specialists? Something like $50.00 or thousands? How does having a PPO prevent this? Does the insurance company give them a cut for referring?

[SIZE=2][SIZE=2]whyno443 - looks like you already got alot of input but wanted to share that I have had Independence Blue Cross' PPO but switched to their HMO plan a couple years ago to $ave on the monthly premium, and find the coverage to be worth the savings for my family of 5. The network of docs is essentially the same between the HMO and PPO and my family doctor makes it pretty easy to deal with the referrals - they send them electronically and have never given us a hard time about going to a specialist.

Thank you lynn222 for responding! Good to see there are caring doctors out there - I will go with an HMO - I can always switch primary doctors if I get a bad one...good article in Consumer ReportsSep 2009 issue and Independence Blue Cross comes out really good.
