Unwinding the Phila & NJ tax riddle....

My family and I are considering a relocation back to live in Center City Philadelphia and taxes are a key part of the equation. I'm the primary income-earner for my family and will be working in New Jersey. The City Wage Tax has come down in recent years; 3.93% in 2009, but still a chunk of change.

There are many City-Data.com threads addressing the City Wage Tax; what I'm trying to get a handle on is the relative comprehensive tax comparison between a Phila resident working in NJ -versus- a NJ resident working in NJ. Has anyone run this analysis recently?

If it were only the Phila City Wage Tax, we can plan accordingly. But it seems unlikely to be that simple. I've read where the City Wage Tax applies on "all salaries, wages or compensation" implying that 401k contributions and other pre-tax dollars deducted from a paycheck are not outside the CWT. Has anyone found this to be true?

Understanding a rough tax comparison is my goal rather than a detailed analysis. Thanks for your insights
