Can anyone fill me in on the safety of the Green or Greene Street area in Philadelphia? What is that part of town known as, i.e., does it have a name like Northern Liberties or Fairmount, etc.?

My son is considering going in on a house on Greene Street with four other Temple U. students. I am not sure what block it's on; all I know is there is a restaurant called, 'The Institute' located very close by.

Thanks for all info. you can give me. My husband does not want my son in a neighborhood where his safety might be compromised; I tend to be less neurotic that way and am ready to let him go if the safety stats are not too threatening.

Thanks for your help.

The area is Spring Garden and it's fine.

Greene street is in Germantown, Green St runs from Northern Liberties through Spring garden. Even those areas vary a bit in terms of safety but on the whole, Green Street (not Greene) is safe...I have a friend at 12th and Green, an area he would never have lived in five years ago. It's changed a lot. Given the proximity to Temple, I'd bet he's on Green, not Greene (not that Greene is unsafe, I don't know much about it)

The Institute Restuarant is on Green Street, so it's the Spring Garden location that the OP is talking about.
