I'll tell you who & what to stay away from. Stay far away from Lowe's & Home Depot. I wanted a solid wooden door. The cost to measure it was $40.00, wheather I ordered it or not. Then, I was told that I didn't want a wooden door; what I wanted was a steel door. I get a real resentment from sales people telling me what I really want.

If I were you I'd just pay to join angieslist.com. The money and hassle you will save if you get a bad contractor (and that's most of them) will be worth the fee to join.

While angies list is helpful .. I found that few people were from in the city ..
A lot don't like to work in the city or charge extra
Has the mix changed ?

You should really try using Buildproof.They can help you find a contractor and they also provide a secure payment system that allows you to pay when you are satisfied with the contractor's work. Buildproof also has an online project management system that helps you communicate better with the contractor. I really believe Buildproof is essential to eliminating financial risk. I would recommend using it for any home improvement project- in my experience, Buildproof makes home improvement projects a lot easier.
