Hi all,

I'm looking to go to Drexel University, and my room mate wants to go to Temple. Thing is, neither of us want to live in the on campus dorms. Living in the Pocono's now, I really enjoy the quiet uneventfulness and peace. I'm not at all familiar with Philly, so are there area's I should watch myself in? I'm from NYC, I've lived in Queens, and in Brooklyn, so I'd rather not live in a rough neighborhood. Been there, done that.. Where should I be looking that's in reasonable (walking?) distance between the two schools? Are there only high rises in this area? I'd like NOT to live in one, but if it came down to it, I would. I know there's things you give up and things you gain when you move from a rural to a big city, but is it a good place for a young guy to start life? Thanks!

there are tons of walkups and homes for rent in addition to highrises (actually, there probably aren't ENOUGH highrises). If you want to be within walking distance of both there's really only two areas, center city and spring garden/fairmount. If you use transit, just make sure you both live off of the el or broad st subway. Temple is on the Broad St line and Drexel. taking on to the other is relatively painless. this opens up a lot more possibilities. South philly, northern liberties (though the temple student may want to take the 15 trolley to broad from there)

Your best choice would be Washington Square West in center city. It's close to the subway for transportation to Temple, and you can take a bus to Drexel (or even walk on a nice day). There are plenty of brownstone apartments in the area. While it is not quiet (it is city living), it is relatively safe (using common sense).

Thanks, this is exactly what I'm looking for. I know it isn't going to be quiet because it's city living, but I just don't want to have to constantly worry about who might be out to rob me, or break into my car. But I'm guessing a Jeep with a soft top is a bad idea anyhow.

Ummm yeah, especially if you plan to park it.

You may want to consider living in or near Chinatown too. You can always catch the Drexel shuttle on 15th and Race during the week.
