Hello, I will soon be moving to either the New York or Philadelphia areas and I was wondering what kind of income is needed to live comfortably in Chester County. Preferably the eastern half due to its proximity to the city. By the way how is the commute from that area? Is there a rail public transit from there to the city? Thanks in advance.

Also, how much culture shock can I expect being from the South (South Carolina)? Ive visited the area but I know that living at a place is much different. Keep in mind I don't have a southern accent, not from a rural area, and don't mind crowds.

well it really depends on what is living comfortablly for you??? single home 3-4 bedrooms 2 full baths, large yard, you'll need over 120K per year. twin or condo 80K per year, small condo or renting 30-60K. don't believe there are any trains in the eastern area of chester cty but there are buses. culture well we're a little more fast paced then the south and maybe not as openly friendly.

Chester County is becoming increasingly more expensive, so living "comfortably" is likely going to be a bit more than what you're used to coming from South Carolina. So keep that in mind, especially for rent/mortgage. In terms of public transportation, SEPTA services a good portion of ChesCo via bus. Here's a map that may give you an idea:

From my experience, South Carolina is pretty laid back and the people are cordial. Like much of the Northeast, however, the Philly area is pretty fast-paced, and you might begin to miss some of that Southern hospitality.

If you move to Chester County I wouldn't anticipate much culture shock. Philadelphia County + Delaware County could be tough on newcomers but Chester County has a nice relaxed easy going atmosphere. Theres enough new people moving into the area that it has a welcoming feel to it.

I've lived in Eastern Chester County (in the section known as the western Main Line) for over 30 years. There is train service which runs along the Main Line and goes directly into Center City Philadelphia. The commute is about 40 minutes.

The area has some beautiful countryside, and there are still large horse farms in some sections. Home prices are about 40-50% of what you would pay in the New York Metro area for a similar size and quality home.
