I don't envy athletic recruiting/recruiters for Temple. It really is a tough place to entice kids with any kind of an academic background. Although the academic performance and selectivity has improved greatly, you're still stuck with the school's physical appearance/neighborhood. When compared to other Big East Conference members like:

University of Cincinnati http://www.aashe.org/files/resources...20aerial_0.jpg
West Virginia University http://assets.slate.wvu.edu/resources/21/1166211559.jpg
University of Connecticut http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3137/...890ac63191.jpg

or Football recruiting competition in the MAC like:

Miami of Ohio Miami University Quicktime Virtual Reality Tour (http://www.miami.muohio.edu/about_miami/virtual_tour/panorama/index.cfm - broken link)
Bowling Green http://go2.bgsu.edu/resource/img/aerial.jpg (broken link)
Ohio University http://www.aashe.org/files/resources...er_biker_2.jpg

I agree, though the area around Univ of Cincinnati is fairly dumpy as well. Not as bad as North Philly but still not the safest place either.

Temple reminds me of St. Johns in NYC -- solid school, very good sections of academia, but the campus and surrounding area is not optimal (though it's improving).

I'm not sure if you're serious, but we out-recruit everyone in the MAC besides Central Michigan and are probably equal to Western Michigan. We've won recruiting battles against WVU and UConn. We dont recruit against Cincy often. As far as your academic assertion, we just got a verbal for basketball from a kid who picked Temple over Harvard, Penn, Rice, and Virginia...

You're kidding right? We're 17 point favorites at home. They have one of the worst run defenses in the country and we have the #3 RB in the country. It's going to be murder unless their QB shreds our pass D.

It was an academic assertion, as well as aesthetics. In terms of the "verbal" from someone who chose Temple over Harvard, Penn, Rice and Virginia, something is obviously wrong there. All four have far superior academic reputations. My guess is that it's a student with minimal acceptance credentials who thinks he's skilled enough to bolt for the NBA in two years.

If your point was that Temple is somehow in the same class as Harvard/Penn/Rice/etc from an academic standpoint, then I think you are absolutely crazy.

Don't take this as a "Temple" slam, it's just that Temple is a fine school with a better basketball program then the aforementioned schools, I would that is this kid's motivation. I hope it works out for him.

Wow, what an absurd, elitist comment. Something is wrong there? He can't pick Temple over 'elite' schools? 'Minimal acceptance credentials'? He was OFFERED at all of those schools. I believe he has something like a 3.7 at St. Benedict's Prep and is looking at going to either medical school or graduate school for business.

I'm just flabbergasted that someone would make such asinine comments.

Absurd, elitist and asinine? No just fact, which might throw you. I'm pretty sure if you were to poll a wide sample of individuals with those choices of schools, one or two might choose Temple. So lets' rethink who's asinine and absurd, shall we? Though I guess perhaps it isn't surprising as a student from a local school. People who grow up here tend to stay. Yet another peculiarity of Philadelphia.

Above you said it was your guess. Which is it?

The high school student you insulted is not local but is from North Jersey in the NY metro area.
