Thinking about moving to Philly. Don't know much about it. So, I was just wondering where we are?

Thanks.

To answer your question, the following have a pretty sizeable middle class African-American population, and are good neighborhoods for middle class African-Americans:

-Abington Township
-Chestnut Hill
-Cheltenham/Wyncote/Cedarbrook
-Most of Center City/downtown (Old City, Society Hill, Northern Liberties, Art Meuseum area, University City, Queen Village, etc)
-East Falls
-Manyunk/Roxborough
-Wynnfield (over near City Ave./St. Joe's University)

Areas to avoid:

-Fishtown
-Port Richmond
-Kensington
-Most of South Philly except for Queen Village
-Anything in Greater Northeast Philly

This is a great list. I've never heard of these places.

Thanks.

I'd add Mt. Airy (West and East) and possibly the Oak Lanes (again West and East) as well.

Definitely Mt. Airy. West Philly as well along Baltimore Ave. between 40th & 50th . . . and just about everywhere in Camden County (NJ).

I don't like putting South Philly in the same category as Fishtown - which is to suggest that you would encounter hostility. If you stick with middle-class neighborhoods (as opposed to white, blue-collar neighborhoods) in South Philly you won't run into that problem. Lots of middle-class black folks in Graduate Hospital.

Just to clarify my question, I am interested in all suburbs in PA. Jersey is a maybe but I've heard that taxes are outrageous.

Thanks.
