I am moving to the area (work is in West Chester), will need an apartment, and am in my 40's so I want a place where I can walk downtown and have alot to look at or do (shopping, restaurants, museums, etc) but don't relish the idea of moving into Philadelphia proper because I have heard its pretty dangerous. I've heard the main line areas are great, Manayunk looks interesting, but I need some expert advice. Looking for a two bedroom two bath with off street parking willing to spend 1300-1700.

Start with the thread that is titled "Dallas to Philadelphia, 35 yr old male" on this page or close by. Check out the West Chester and surounding area recomendations and disregard the comments about Jenkintown.

Well said, that was a pretty solid rundown of the surrounding area from just a week or so ago. Of course, if you have additional questions don't be shy!

Why don't you just move to West Chester? It has a pretty decent "downtown" area and would be extremely close to your job. The other areas you named aren't exactly that close to West Chester and living in Philadelphia proper and commuting to West Chester would be over an hour in rush hour traffic.

On a side note, why are so many people afraid of Philadelphia? I grew up more well off and more sheltered than probably 98% of the population and it doesn't phase me at all. What's the deal here? Philadelphia is no different than any other major city.

A reverse commute from say, Center City (downtown) Philly to West Chester would certainly be a hassle. It certainly makes sense to find a spot close to if not in West Chester. Beyond that, you'd be missing out if you did not visit the city, especially Center City and many of its surrounding areas.

I agree. Come during daylight but keep the doors locked and one foot on the brake and one foot on the gas LOL. Seriously none of these little suburban centers like West Chester can hold a candle to "Philadelphia Proper" when it comes to "shopping, resturants, museums etc."

A murder a day tends to scare people off.

What is Philadelphia Proper? Is that Center City? How does the other 95% iof the city(N. Philly, West Philly, SW, NE) compare to the burbs?

How is it any more of a hassle than commuting from WC to CC? It is the same train, either way.

Actually, there is no train to West Chester at this time - the R3 Regional ceased service there some twenty years ago - or else it would be a reasonable option for those who liked city living but had to contend with an employer in West Chester.
