I am considering a position at CHOP that is 2nd shift. Would not be getting off work till after 11pm. I would be living alone, and would hopefully sell my car and try to do public transportation.

Any insight on where a safe place to life would be with access to reliable transport? I also have a dog so any place that I could get her out to play would be great too. I am really not familiar with Philly and a little nervous about it, but it would be a great opportunity for my career.

can anyone help out? what kind of consideration do I need to take into consideration with that shift?

Your best bet is Port Richmond and Fishtown. These are old Irish neighborhoods, and you could get a house a couple blocks from the Market-Frankford El, and simply get on the El, and it would drop you off at 34th and Market, where you would just walk down to work.

You're lucky you could do your entire commute carless, in one leg. Some people would have to change buses many times.

Good luck!

You didn't mention your age, how big of a place you're looking for, what you'd like your rent to be and what you're looking for in an apartment aside from a place to sleep and store your things.

Easiest commute to CHOP with decent dog parks nearby would be to live in Fitler Square or Graduate Hospital or, over in University City around Clark Park.

They would all be a 5-15 minute bus or trolley ride or a 10-25 minute walk. Well, the South St. bridge is still being rebuilt so you'd have to take the bus from Fitler Square or Grad Hospital but the bridge should reopen to bikes and peds within the year.

Fitler Square. It is right across the South Street Bridge and there is a park right there to walk your dog.

I am newly 32. If I can sell my car and do public transport I could afford something in the 1200-1500 range. No concerns about taking public transport at that hour of the night?? I am going to check out fitler square havent seen that one before. I was checking out university city (though a little of a young crowd and not many places for my dog that I saw) and Manyunk looked decent to take the bus.

I was more concerned about the evening commute home alone at 1130 at night.....Thanks for the advice thus far!
