I recently had the chance to drive in and around Philadelphia...and I love you city by the way.

However, I was flipping around the dial, and stopped on a call-in sports show. All kinds of callers, but a couple of them, and one in particular, had a VERY strong accent...sounded almost identical to Rocky Balboa character of the Rocky movies.

So, I always thought that was a fictional accent...but I guess that is an actual accent heard in Philly then? I'm just surprised! Either that, or the caller was just putting it on, and the sports talk show host didn't call him on it!

Rocky's accent is as fictional as the character. Stallone is from the Main Line but his accent is a caricature.

Rocky is from Kensington. Every shot that shows him outside of his house has the El rumbling through in the background. Adrian is from South Philly.

The only well known example of a Philly accent I can think of is Jim Cramer. Just listen to him when he gets heated (which is pretty much all the time) and you'll hear it.

I also think Chris Matthews and Bam Margera sound like a real Philadelphian.

Especially Don Vito minus some of his vocab issues.

Chris Matthews should sound like a "real" Philadelphian...he grew up in the same neighborhood I did in the Far Northeast.

Chris Matthews gives himself away every time he says "tawk" for "talk" and "nall" for "now". I agree, Rocky's accent was a caricature of supposedly a South Philly accent. From what I understand, the locale was supposed to be South Philly, even though a lot of it was filmed in Kensington. I'll never forget seeing it in a theater full of Philadelphians, oohing and aahing as Rocky was running past all our local landmarks -- Italian Market, Kelly Drive, and of course Art Museum steps.
