I would check out the rest of the city (and especially the suburbs) to see if you can find anything you like better.

Per Zillow:

Who Lives In Richmond?

People who live in this neighborhood

1. Melting Pot — Low-income, foreign-language-speaking urbanites.
2. Wise Old Urbanites — Older home-owning city dwellers in older buildings.
3. Golden Years — Seniors over 65 who live in the city.
Not welcoming to outsiders? LOL! we have people from all over moving in and nobody is hassling them. Where are the bad parts of Bridesburg? LOL!

If I could remember how to say "welcome" in Polish, I would!

Welcome.

Sometimes people just talk about neighborhoods they know nothing about in order to make where they live look more attractive.

Default Questions

I appreciate all the kind words and responses I have got so far- and I would just like to add a few details about my search-

When people say Port Richmond, I noticed that it extends on both sides of Lehigh, which is weird, because it seems like a natural boundary. Is the part between west of Lehigh still Port Richmond? Or is if Fishtown? I generally mean east of Lehigh; west of Lehigh seems just as trendy and overpriced as Fishtown proper (whatever it is)

The public schools in the neighborhood are Richmond School and Bridesburg School, (except for a part of Bridesburg which is Stearne School?)- they both seem pretty good. Do you have any thoughts? I think there test scores are actually better than the state averages.

How far west does the nice port richmond go? I've heard everything from Frankford (which looks pretty run-down) to Aramingo, which looks super-tidy. I'm guessing it's somewhere in between? Like Tulip or Jasper?

How active are the community groups? If I go to a meeting, is everyone going to be 30 years older than me, or do younger people get involved with stuff too?

Stearne School is not in Bridesburg. Port Richmond is east of Aramingo, everything west is generally considered Kensington. West of Aramingo up by Bridesburg is Frankford Valley.

Default Nice neighborhoods

Hey CzerwPraw,
Moderator Cut

I was also a Polish immigrant to Philadelphia, albeit I came in the 90s. Nonetheless, I still spent a lot of time in the Port Richmond/Bridesburg Area, and lived there for two years in 98-00 during 5th and 6th grades. In my opinion, the amount of authentic Polish culture in these neighborhoods is unbeatable, and I've always been amazed how quiet and well-kept these neighborhoods are in comparison with Kensington next door (The biggest problems on my block when I was little was getting a basketball stuck in a tree).

I would say that Port Richmond starts probably at Tulip to the West and goes to the River, and includes that triangle west of Lehigh, although it's true, there's not many Poles there. There is a lot of debate about Port Richmond's western boundary- there have been some section 8 placements west of aramingo, so a lot of people just disattach that whole area from port Richmond, but a lot of upstanding, decent, folks still live there, so why should we ignore it? I would say it gets sketchy one you pass John Paul Jones middle school or Northeastern Hospital.

I've also heard a debate about that section of Bridesburg west of I-95. It seems a bit more run-down than the rest-of Bridesburg, but it seems just as white (about 95%) and still in generally good shape, so it doesn't really seem to fit in with Frankford either. I always see it when I take the R7 and I think it looks almost picturesque when compared to the parts of North Philly one just passed.

There's no debate about it, west of I-95 is NOT Bridesburg, it's Frankford Valley.

The people over there WISH it was Bridesburg, but alas, it's not. Their kids aren't even permitted to go to Bridesburg Elementary.
