Following up on my last post, I also want to add Swarthmore to your "suburban potentials" list. It, too, is on the R3 train line, providing a quick trip to University City. As a Penn professor, you might appreciate the academic feel of that town. (Swarthmore College is there.)

I would tell anybody looking to move into DREXEL HILL to look else where (Springfield and havertown are great options right next door).. My parents just moved to broomall to escape the rising crime rate and deterioting neigborhoods (I still live in southern DREXEL HILL by garretford elementary school and the old st charles borremeo school)..

Its a shame because there are other really nice and beautiful locations in drexel hill that are very safe but some of the parts esp near clifton and lansdowne are starting to get worse.. You can't escape the UD school district when living in drexel hill which is a real deal breaker with families moving into the area (or lack of)
When you live in the row home/ twin home parts it can feel like you live in the city bc of all the congestion.. As I said there are some amazing single homes in drexel hill just have to scout out the particular section
