This is great news for the Delaware Valley:

"The Port of Philadelphia added two new customers this week, including Hyundai Motor - which will leave Port Newark to import cars into Pennsylvania - and Sea Star Line, which held a ceremony today to welcome its inaugural ship."

Port of Philadelphia snags Hyundai from Port Newark | - NJ.com

I think the Delaware River dredging from 40 to 45 feet will further increase customers to our ports, what are your thoughts?

Well I do feel a little bad for Newark but definitely very happy that our port will be getting more work. I'm not knowledgeable enough to know about the environmental impact of dredging but I can certainly see the potential economic benefits.

The Delaware River dredging from 40 to 45 feet will allow the Delaware River ports (Philadelphia, Chester, Wilmington, and the smaller ports on the New Jersey side) to remain players in the game but won't make them into big players in the game, at least for containerized goods (the fastest growing segment of ocean-going international trade). New York (or more accurately, Elizabeth/Newark) will probably always be the top dog in the mid-Atlantic, Baltimore is going to 50 feet and is a bigger player than Philadelphia already, and Norfolk/Hampton Roads is in a much better position to get significant share of discretionary cargo (i.e. cargo that isn't being shipped to the metro area and other areas nearby), in part because it is already at 50 feet (and has one of the finest natural harbors in North America). Having said the above, the Delaware River dredging is a very good thing for Pennsylvania and Delaware economically-speaking and will help retain jobs in the area and maybe even create a few new ones.

notice that the cars will be coming here well in advance of the 45 ft. depth. The biz is coming here because it's cheaper and faster. Newark/Elizabeth is crowded and ships 90% of the off-loaded cargo by truck.

Philadelphia has superior rail access and is in the midst of a big double-stack (containers) clearance project (raising the overpasses) so our port can move even more cargo.
