Ok so I am planning to take my masters at Temple University starting in the fall. I am 26 year old, single, female. I love the city and want to be around a lot of action, I also want to feel safe and secure at the same time. Any advise on where to look at for apartments?

Overbrook Park is a great area. There have been a lot of young families and young professionals moving into this area. The Overbrook Park not let it be mistaken for Overbrook is inside the city however it gives you that suburban feel. Located close to major high end suburban shopping and only minutes to fine shops and restaurants in center city. I give this area an A+!

How much can you afford to pay for rent? Are you keeping a car? My initial suggestions would be center city (especially Washington Square West) and Bella Vista. In both of those areas a car would be a liability and you will be close to the Broad Street Subway which will take you to Temple.

Overbrook is not around any action. It's a heckuva trip if you are looking to be around restaurants, shops, bars, etc. aside from center city neighborhoods passyunk square area in south philly has a lot going on and is convenient for a quick septa trip to Temple. Fairmount ave. near the art museum is nice and also has a lot of night life. Fishtown/northern liberties is also is busy with a ton of new bars and restaurants and is a quick bike ride to Temple.

not sure why no one has mentioned center city, but you can find a cheap studio there and live IN the action. it's also pretty safe

Stay on campus the first year. After you meet people and get to know the city you can pick a neighborhood.

The area around Temple can be dicey. It's only safe in the immediate surroundings, like a 2-5 block radius. The rest is some of Philly's most dangerous terrian. I think Center City (Old City/ Rittenhouse Square) would be ideal for you. Cosmopolitan and pretty safe IMO. The upper end of Center City (from Market St north ending at Spring Garden St) has some decent choices also. Both parts have close access to the Broad Street Line that runs to Temple. University City in West Philly would be excellent (hipsters, good safety for the most part, cheap large housing) but wouldn't be as convenient as Center City travelwise.
